Council Minutes 1/28/15
  1. Approval of Minutes
  2. Reports
    • (Mod): Congratulate Admin for a great MLK assembly.
    • (A-Mod): If you have a motion to be brought, please come to Exec so we can fully prepare.
    • (OEC): Will be starting election work.
    • (Condom): Got full support of the school nurse and will be sending out the survey to the parents shortly.
    • (SA): Winter Carnival event slots are nearly filled up and we’re looking for volunteers.
    • Motion to reevaluate base consequences of Academic Integrity Policy violation if perpetrator completes Restorative Justice.
    • We do not limit the number of times and individual can complete RJ.
    • If there is no consensus, the base consequences are enacted.
    • UVM and Dartmouth have similar processes (see: REL65 scandal 2014).
    • This is somewhat strong-arming individuals to complete RJ, but it is not at all an easy way out.
    • No matter what the incentive, students would still get something out of it.
    • Majority of high schools do not report integrity violations.
    • This allows flexibility for the most appropriate punishment.
    • The value of the “teachable” moment is greater than the risk of “letting someone get away.”
    • Judicial system has similar program with Diversion.
    • For some, high school IS all about college.
    • If one deserves the consequences, one will get them.
    • No AIP violators have completed RJ yet.
    • Though the perpetrators of the exam thefts in the past went to 4-year colleges, they might not have had the best path or support.
    • Black and white rules only teach students how to cheat better.
