ο [SSC]: We interviewed another candidate - very impressed with the school!

3. Co-Curricular Code Discussion
ο [Ms. Addante]:
o Process began in 2008, in Curriculum Committee
o In 2009, the document was adopted by Council, and now is in its final review - looking for more feedback
o Both the Co-Curricular Code and the Academic Integrity Policy are under the HHS Honor Code
o Did extensive research, writing to come up with this revised document
o Trying to create broad, comprehensive language to encompass the diversity of Co-Curricular activities
o See “CCCC Purpose and Process Statement” for general objectives and principles

• [Curric]: Co-curricular code coming up on the agenda.
• [OEC]: Elections: looking for short speeches for the kick-off assembly.
• [SL]: Mr. Brush said we can put a water fountain on the wooden shack near the football field, and if there’s enough money we’ll get another one.
• [SA]: The senior pizza party was today!
• [Exec]: Critical Friends’ Groups meetings.
• [SSC]: Abidjan is the new student representative. We’re continuing work to look for a superintendent.
• [Katherine B]: Fashion show for sophomore class committee April 2nd!
• [Katie W]: Look out for a compost presentation to present in CGs.
• [Carl]: Fancy Fridays should come back!

3. Community Service Discussion (cont.)
• Motion: I move to refer this to the Curriculum Committee.
Debate Closes
Motion Passes

4. Water Bottle Motion
• Motion: I move to amend the water bottle motion.
o [Ben]: I have support from Environmental Club and talked to many students about the problems with the original motion. My amendment would exclude athletic/booster clubs as long as recycling receptacles are present.
Debate Closes
Motion Passes (aka motion brought back for discussion)

• Motion: I move to amend the motion to read: I move to eliminate the vending and/or selling of plastic water bottles on the HHS campus excluding athletic/booster clubs as long as recycling receptacles are present.
o We should encourage sports teams/fans to recycle
o The reason our environment is in bad shape is because people can’t sacrifice a small profit for the sake of the environment
o [Ms. Gillespie]: POI: The Council does not have jurisdiction over the Caf’s services – private business.
• 2nd Amendment: I move to amend the motion to read “recycling receptacles are present and the use of them is encouraged”.
o [Jennie]: We want to ensure the integrity of the original motion is still in this new motion if we pass it – makes it better.
o Don’t think this is necessary since recycling is already instilled in our culture
o People don’t always recycle – even in classrooms
o If you are at all doubtful about the original amendment, this 2nd amendment will make it better if passed
Debate Closes
2nd Amendment Passes
• Discussion on Amended Amendment
o There shouldn’t be any exceptions made for plastic water bottles
o Use large jugs of water and sell cups instead, get creative!
o What is the next best option? Soda?
o Let’s make a plan to take plastic water bottles away slowly
o We can’t take away revenue from sports teams
o We are already way above the status quo
o There has to be a compromise here for both sides
o We can’t tell parents not to sell water bottles at games
o Money is a problem for everyone, especially athletics
o You can never be too stringent w/ the environment
o Original motion was for water, not for plastic bottles
o You can always drink out of water fountains!
o We need to be aware of our limitations, educate!
o Just because we’re ahead of the game doesn’t mean we have to stop
Debate Closes
Amendment Fails — Original motion put back in place

Afterthoughts: Plastic Water Bottles
• We have done a disservice here by not representing the people.
• Is this motion irrelevant because we have no power over the Caf?
• The “Friends of” organizations with HHS are separate from the school like the Caf
• Couldn’t this be counted as a school rule?
o We signed a contract with the Caf services concerning their products

3. Rainbow Alliance Report
ο We wanted to inform you of our “Speak-Out Boxes”
o Anonymous

o Boxes will be in Guidance Dept., Library, and Science Resource Center
o Boxes locked and supervised
o Collecting info about culture of our school
o NOT a help box
ο Looking for Council members to be ambassadors
ο Day of Silence - selling t-shirts and buttons this year, “not silent” focus
ο Any accusations can be investigated, but we can't take direct action

4. Plastic Water Bottle Motion (continued)
ο [Molly Zegans]: Regarding education, we'll add this to the Environmental Club Civitas powerpoint in the Fall
ο In the mission statement, we are obligated to care for the environment
ο Look into selling re-usable water bottles
ο You can always fill up a used plastic water bottle
Debate Closes
Motion Passes

5. Community Service Discussion
ο People should feel compelled to participate, yet a requirement would make more people do it
ο Some teachers disheartened by the process, not worth the immense hardship
ο Let's show the evidence of our community service efforts already
ο Requirement keeps it at the forefront of everyone's minds
ο Most students think community service is already a requirement
ο Every student can find community service that is enjoyable
ο A requirement could encourage kids to continue to do it in the future
ο We need a clear standpoint if a motion is brought
ο Long-term projects are something we lack at this school, valuable to have
ο If the administration piece isn't in place, a requirement isn't possible
ο We don't need a college “check box”, seniors are performing plenty of hours
ο Why not require it? We might inspire a love for volunteering
ο Seniors should recognize colleges look for community service hours
