Welcome to the Hanover High School Council blog.

On June 14, 1977, the Dresden Board of directors voted unanimously to support the system of governance body at Hanover High School known as The Council. The Council shall have the authority to act on all matter at Hanover High School not controlled by school board, state policy, and administrative regulations. The Council is the governing body of Hanover High School.

The minutes are posted every week and can be found below.

Council Minutes 1/21/15
  1. Approval of Minutes
  2. Reports
    • (Mod): MLK Assembly is this Friday during Activity Period.
    • (A-Mod): Will be coming around to committees in the next couple weeks.
    • (DSB): Approved the 2015-2016 budget and gave a report on the upcoming AIP revisions.
    • (Sec): Staff alternate can vote.
    • (Condom): Talking to nurses before the next meeting.
    • (Curric): Switched with RJ so meeting Friday.
    • (SL): 358 responses to the survey, report coming soon.
    • (SA): WC signups online during CG so equal chances of getting an event. Takes place February 9-13.
    • (Admin): Compiled pictures for MLK assembly.
    • (COI): Presentation on mindfulness by Mrs. G.
    • Motion to reevaluate base consequences of Academic Integrity Policy violation if perpetrator completes Restorative Justice.
    • This change has the support of Mr. Campbell.
    • It is twisted to have a no tolerance policy as currently in place in a learn-from-mistakes learning environment.
    • If consequences are not enforced then preventative measures are not as effective.
    • Should be teaching programs at young age to prevent any cheating.
    • This motion takes a lenient view on morality issues.
    • If you just keep hitting someone when they mess up, what is that really going to accomplish?
    • We should take advantage of learning moments.
    • If this motion is passed, we need to communicate to the student body that this is not a free pass.

Council Minutes 1/7/15

  2. Reports
    • (Mod): No meeting next week due to exams.
    • (DSB): Finished budgeting and making card for other volunteer members of the board.
    • (Admin): Need help mounting photos for MLK Day.
    • (SL): Survey going out on Thursday.
    • (SA): Worked out Winter Carnival sign-ups online.
    • (RJ): AIP revisions coming back at the next meeting.
    • (Ross Patten): Sign up for the talent show on 2/6 to win WC points.
    • CG can create a dedicated time to read and reflect.
    • Paper versions can be acquired from the guidance office.
    • Electronic version allows for more/longer comments.
    • More than just a time issue; administrative time and organization is also a factor here.
    • Paper version uses upwards of 5000 pieces of paper a year.
    • There is still time in CG that can be used to read electronically.
    • The 3Rs start with Reduce as first priority.
    • We should not use the excuse that it is not relatively wasteful.
    • 25% of all report cards are never received by students and realistically less by parents.
    • Motion fails.

Council Minutes 12/17/14
  1. Approval of Minutes
  2. Reports
    • (Mod): AIP coming after break for uninterrupted work.
    • (Sec): This is the last meeting before the Holiday Break. Freshman and staff alternate can vote.
    • (DSB): Presentation on AIP reporting, 2015/2016 budget will be approved in January, and Dr. Bass clarified recent school cancellations due to snow.
    • (Curric): Finished course evaluation work.
    • (Admin): Voted not in favor of mandatory web presence for teachers.
    • (SA): Completed a lovely soccer match; it was a nice clean game.
    • (RJ): Discussed changes to RJ given upcoming changes to AIP.
    • Motion passes.
  3. Course Evaluation Discussion
    • Some teachers are not doing them or doing them incorrectly.
    • Implement a generic survey that can be filled out online.
    • There needs to be more open-ended questions.
    • All teachers should ask some universal questions.
    • This information is used in end of year evaluations with department head.
    • Part of problem is disconnecting course from teachers.
    • Many surveys are not answered when just emailed.
    • Follow Dartmouth model of must complete evaluation to receive grade.
    • Make part of five point assignment at the end of the semester.
    • Anonymity must be preserved which poses problems with tracking completion.
    • Before grade completion gives control of completion but there are fears of repercussions and vice-versa for after.
    • Anyway it happens, it needs to happen more often.
  4. Report Card Comment Discussion
    • Turnaround time does not always allow for worthwhile comments.
    • Feedback should be at minimum every quarter.
    • The addition of PowerSchool makes things go quicker.
