Welcome to the Hanover High School Council blog.

On June 14, 1977, the Dresden Board of directors voted unanimously to support the system of governance body at Hanover High School known as The Council. The Council shall have the authority to act on all matter at Hanover High School not controlled by school board, state policy, and administrative regulations. The Council is the governing body of Hanover High School.

The minutes are posted every week and can be found below.

    • (Mod): Props to everyone for getting through a rough week!
    • (SL): Working on hand dryers.
    • (Admin): Money allocation for the MLK Day speaker.
    • (SA): Starting Quidditch sign-ups soon.
    • (OEC): J-Comm elections this Friday.
    • (Curric): Worked on wording for the Homework Assignment Motion.
    • (RJ): First meeting this Friday in Mme. Doyle’s room.
  3. Homework Assignment Motion
    • Amendment to the amendment (“All homework must be assigned and made available by the end of the class period. Any modification related to the next day’s assignment must be made available 15 minutes after the school day ends.”) fails.
    • Amendment to the amendment: “All homework must be assigned and made available by the end of the class period.”
    • Curric worked on this new wording.
    • Decreases flexibility of communication.
    • Amendment to the amendment fails.
    • Amendment to the amendment: I move that all homework and required materials be assigned during a student's class period. It is not permitted to change entirely or increase a homework assignment after class has ended. Modifications to the existing assignment and any supplemental materials must be made available no later than 20 minutes after the last class period of the day.
    • How does this deal with assigning homework online?
    • Motion to refer to Curriculum Committee.
    • Focus on communication and not on homework in general.
    • Motion to refer fails.
    • Amendment to the amendment passes.

    • (Mod): Open house tomorrow [later cancelled].
    • (DSB): Meeting next week, no agenda yet.
  3. Homework Assignment Motion
    • “I move that all homework and required materials must be assigned and made available in class. Any supplementary online materials that do not directly affect the assignment may be posted any time thereafter.”
    • This is a widespread problem.
    • Using websites instead of class time.
    • Extensions can still be given.
    • Worried about shortage of time for teachers.
    • Is this more of a supervision (dept. coordinator) issue?
    • Internet should be beneficial resource.
    • Amendment: “All homework must be assigned and made available by the end of the class period. Any supplementary online materials that do not directly affect the assignment may be posted any time thereafter”
    • Reasonable.
    • Does not deal with different periods of same course.
    • Student’s responsibility to find assignment.

    • (Mod): Welcome 9th graders!
    • (Sec): Junior alternate can vote.
    • (PR): Civitas presentations next Tuesday.
    • (Curric): Chair of ad hoc RJ committee is Andrea Sedlacek.
    • (SA): Assigned Council members to clubs, set up Winter Carnival dates.
    • (OEC): New and tuition student elections take place Thursday, J-Comm elections next Friday.
    • (SL): Starting survey for quarter 1, including Plan M.
    • (COI): Discussed long term field trips and the five-year plan.
    • Allergy concerns are not large enough to pose an issue according to nurse.
    • Never enforced anyways.
    • No custodial opinion.
    • Stairwells are colloquially included.
    • Debate closes.
    • Motion passes.
  3. Freshmen Personal Computers in Class Discussion
    • We are a Bring Your Own Device school.
    • Chromebooks can be monitored.
    • Terms of Service for initiative are excessive.
    • Difficult to support multiple platforms.
    • Most in-class activities can be accomplished on chromebooks.
    • Much less hassle for Tech Dept.
    • From prior experience with chromebooks, it did everything it needed to do and put focus on work.

    • (Mod): Welcome to the annual retreat! Our goals as a group this year is to be more Active, Accessible, and Accountable. My personal contribution to these will be the productivity of my meetings with Max and the Administration.
    • (A-Mod): AAA - getting around to all the committee meetings and staying on top of all the happenings.
    • (Treas): AAA - stronger ties between SA and the clubs we represent.
    • (Sec): AAA - making sure everyone is on-time and present to Council while also maintaining duties of writing good minutes on time.
    • (DSB): AAA - being more outspoken and active, especially as a non-voting member on DSB.
    • (PR): AAA - being more accessible online and otherwise and getting announcement out to the school.
